Reinventing the Wheel: Why UX Design is Key in the AI Revolution
Most apps today are horseless carriages with engines strapped on — not vehicles specifically built for AI.,When we invented the car engine, we didn’t redesign transportation from scratch. We simply removed the horse and bolted an engine onto the existing carriage.
Naturally, this led to issues. The height of the carriage was built around the horse’s form — not the engine’s. Only later did we realize that placing the engine lower to the ground gave more control, stability, and range of motion.
This is exactly where we are with AI today.
Most of the digital tools we use were designed for humans — full of repetitive tasks and attention-demanding interfaces. But the promise of AI is the exact opposite: to reduce — or even eliminate — the attention we spend on repetitive work.
💡 That’s why I believe UX designers will play a critical role in this next leap. We won’t just retrofit AI into old workflows — we’ll need to invent a new kind of “vehicle” entirely. One that’s designed from the ground up for AI to be the engine.
Every app we know will undergo a gradual reinvention. Those that don’t? They’ll be left behind — irrelevant in an AI-first world.
As a UXer with 15+ years in the field, I’ve never felt more alive. It’s the beginning of a new era (we're just getting started), and we get to pave the road ahead.
🎙️ That’s also why, six months ago, I rebranded my podcast to UX for AI. Since then, I’ve spoken with cutting-edge technologists, AI tinkerers, and vibe coders — and shared their experiments, and insights.
Give it a listen. There are true gems waiting in those episodes. Link in the comment.,

Stepping into the New Era: Why UX Design is the Key to Applicability of AI
The dawn of a new era is upon us. AI, or artificial intelligence, is more than a buzzword; it's an emerging reality shaping our daily lives and interactions. As a UX designer with over a decade and a half of experience, I can attest to the transformative effect and potential that AI holds for the digital world. Similar to how the car engine revolutionized transportation, I firmly believe that AI has the capacity to redefine the digital realm. But success in this new era demands more than piecemeal integration of AI into existing systems. The task at hand is nothing less than a complete reinvention of our digital "vehicle".
Learning from Past Technological Leapfrogs
From Horse-driven Carriages to Engine-powered Vehicles
When the car engine was invented, it was not a comprehensive redesign. Instead, the contemporary horse carriage was merely re-adapted into an 'engine-in' vehicle. The height and structure of this prototype remained centered around the equine form, leading to inefficiencies and limitations. It was realized later that positioning the engine closer to the ground resulted in enhanced control, stability, and motion range.
Recognizing Design Missteps
The problem with early vehicles was that they weren't engineered entirely around the engine's needs. Our present digital infrastructure mirrors this outdated model—we've designed our current digital landscape primarily for human users, unaware of AI's latent potential. Today's apps suffer from an overabundance of repetitive tasks and require constant user input, both symptoms of a design intended for people, not AI.

Necessity of UX Design in Integrating AI
The key to unlocking the full potential of AI lies in holistic, user-centered design strategies. Only by building an entirely new vehicle, from the ground up, around AI–the engine of this digital transformation, can we enable the AI revolution. And there's no one better suited for this job than UX designers. In an increasingly AI-first world, those apps that do not make the shift will risk irrelevancy.
The Role of UX Designers
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." – Eleanor Roosevelt
As UX designers, we are not merely tasked with retrofitting AI into old workflows. Instead, our role is to drive the creation of a new kind of user experience, one that's innately AI-first. It's a challenging yet exciting journey that makes me feel more connected and vital to the digital ecosystem than ever before.
- Auditing existing apps and identifying areas where AI can provide enhanced functionality.
- Redesigning these apps from the ground up to reap the full benefits of AI integration.
- Testing and iterating on these new designs to ensure maximum usability and user satisfaction.
- Empowering users through intuitive interfaces that minimize friction.
- Enhancing accessibility by leveraging AI to adapt interfaces according to user needs.
