How to Clean Terminal Text in Three Steps

/fix-copy for Claude Code — zero dependencies

Copy text from any terminal — Claude Code, VS Code, iTerm2, Windows Terminal, whatever. Paste it into Copy Fixer. ANSI codes, trailing whitespace, broken paragraphs — paste it all.

The pipeline strips ANSI escape codes, resolves carriage return overwrites, trims whitespace, normalizes tabs, removes shell prompts and quote markers, converts box-drawing tables to Markdown, and reflows paragraphs — while preserving diffs and code blocks.

Install the /fix-copy command for Claude Code. Copy text, run the command, paste clean text. One step. The same pipeline runs as a Node.js script — zero dependencies, works in any project.

Ten Cleanup Steps. One Paste.

Text copied from a terminal brings everything with it: escape codes, hard line breaks, box-drawing tables. Copy Fixer removes all of it in one pass, in your browser.

Cleaning it by hand

Deleting codes like [0;36m one by one
Re-joining lines the terminal wrapped
Rebuilding tables cell by cell
Removing prompts, quote markers and trailing spaces
Doing it all again on the next paste

What Copy Fixer does

Strips ANSI color codes and resolves progress-bar overwrites
Reflows paragraphs broken by terminal wrapping
Converts box-drawing tables to Markdown
Leaves diffs and code blocks untouched
Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Copy Fixer FAQ

A 10-step pipeline: strips ANSI color codes, resolves carriage return overwrites (progress bars), processes backspace characters, trims trailing whitespace, normalizes tabs to spaces, strips shell prompts, removes quote markers (the ▎ characters Claude uses), removes common leading indentation, converts box-drawing tables to Markdown, and reflows broken paragraphs while preserving diffs and code blocks.

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server. Your text never leaves your machine.

Yes. The /fix-copy slash command for Claude Code runs the same 10-step pipeline as a Node.js script. Copy text, run /fix-copy, paste clean text. Install it from the GitHub repo — two files, zero dependencies.

All of them. VS Code integrated terminal, iTerm2, Windows Terminal, PowerShell, tmux, Warp, Alacritty, Hyper, the default macOS Terminal — if it outputs text, Copy Fixer cleans it.

ANSI escape codes are invisible sequences that terminals use to control text color, bold, underline, and cursor position. When you copy text from a terminal, these codes come along as garbled characters like [0;36m or [1m. Copy Fixer strips all of them in the first step of its pipeline.

Yes. The reflow engine detects preformatted blocks — diffs, line-numbered code, tool output, and markdown tables — and leaves them untouched. Only prose paragraphs that were broken by terminal wrapping get reflowed.

The /fix-copy slash command for Claude Code is MIT-licensed and available on GitHub. The browser tool on this page uses the same processing pipeline. Both are free to use.
